The most widely held theory associates them with the "Barcelona flower," a modernist design by architect Puig i Cadafalch. The similarity between the two tiles, with their distinctive rosette design, is evident.

Another theory suggests that the tiles were created in the workshops of Bilbao City Hall between 1940 and 1950, adapting the "Barcelona flower" design to make it more durable and suitable for the city's rainy climate.

Finally, some argue that the Bilbao tile design was entirely original to the City Hall, although this version lacks solid documentary support.

Whatever their origin, the tiles became an emblematic element of Bilbao. Their strength, durability, and ability to drain rainwater made them an ideal choice for urban paving.

Originally gray due to the added iron filings, today they are made black with cement and other materials. There has even been an initiative to create edible tiles in chocolate or vanilla flavors.
